I might add, when you start up the system with the CD drive as the first boot drive and the XP CD in the CD drive, you will probably see a message on the screen asking if the computer should boot from the CD, something like "Press any key to boot from the bootable CD-ROM". You have to be fairly quick because the message doesn't usually stay on the screen very long.
