Each time I try to do a search under start/search/files & folders x.p. professional install starts up and tries to re-install itself
If I click cancel each time it(usualy 5-6 times)it will stop & I can then do my search.My system is a Dell1 3gig, p4 W/386megs of ram.Can anyone help?

Back up any important data. Clean install. Make sure and delete the partition,format and clean install. Did it come like this? Make sure you have all the drivers handy.
The XP install key will be on the computer, if you are using the Install CD from Dell. The directions for install will be on http://support.dell.com/us/en/home.asp just click configuration under your Asset tag.

Obviously, for some reason your install of XP was incomplete. Did anyhing strange happen during the install? Have you tried running SFC, or doing a repair installation?
