Very small. Authors don't make all that much...

Unfortunately, the old Winmag posts are gone for good. They shut down the server and by now it's either been junked or reformatted or something. (Or sitting in a dusty closet somewhere forgotten.) I could have made local copies of the forum database, but I don't think CMP would have looked too kindly on that.

IMO, the bigger shame was the loss of the Tips database. Ethan Welkes and I put a lot of work into that (me on the backend, him on inputting the tips and sending out the Tip of the Day e-mails). I would have been nice if I could have saved the data and re-launched it. There were a lot of good tips in there.

Jason - Google didn't archive any of it? I would have figured somebody in that organization would have done so. Maybe a reader saved all of them - what do you think? A 'call for all old WinMag readers' alert, or something to that effect?

Google archives stuff, but not for long. (I searched for "Windows site:bbs.winmag.com" on Google which should turn up at least one post, but didn't give anything.) The Internet Wayback Machine has the URL listed, but the actual posts aren't. I'm afraid the Win98 forum posts appear to be gone for good.

However, the Winmag Tips section is listed!

Many times I when I browse through the forum and see long threads I just read Shelly's response for quick and concise resolutions.

One of my favorite "Shelly Posts" was related to someone's announcment and request for input regarding a water cooled graphics card.

First, I'd like to say thanks to Shelly for the time and expertise he has shared.

Second, I think a sincere thanks is due to all here who regularly contribute to help poor lost souls like myself. It's rather easy to gain book knowledge, anyone with access to a library and who can read can do that. It's a totally different thing to learn from the actual experiances of others and, in that respect, I've learned more about computing in the last few weeks than I have in years.

I've no doubt in my mind that there are many members here who have forgotten more about computing than I'll ever know, and for sharing your wisdom with me ... I tip my hat to you all
