"FireFox Tab like IE 7.0"

I've just converted to FireFox 3.01 from IE7.0. One thing I really like is that text on pages seems to be clearer with FireFox.

One thing I don't like, is that FF does not have a " blank" Tab beside the current one in use, as IE 7.0 does.

Is there an add-on that will make FF's Tab bar look and behave like IE7.0's?

My solution:

I use the Add-on "All-in-One Gestures", which allows certain motions of the mouse for some functions. For a new tab, I hold down the right button and mouse up briefly, and a new tab appears. There are dozens of other functions. I always use the left and right motions for Back and Forward in the browser. In fact, I find it distracting when on another computer on which I have to actually go up to the buttons at the top of the browser.

BTW, I find the Add-ons a great way of customizing.

Here's another one which I like better:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/69

It adds it on to the left end of the tab row, like the old Mozilla and Netscape browsers or the current SeaMonkey.

I've got one on the left already. At a guess, it comes from Tab Mix Plus.

But Tab Mix Plus isn't available for Firefox 3 yet.

You don't need to use an extension for that. If you right click on your toolbar, and go to customize you can add a "new tab" button by dragging it to your toolbar, in one of two areas (either up top near the menu, or near the navigation buttons). Guess what that opens? That's right, a blank tab.

You can also go to preferences, and Tabs and check "always show the tab bar" which will make it waste space when you only have one site open, just like Internet Explorer.

Firefox's "Vista Aero" theme also puts that blank tab there.

I didn't even notice, and I use that theme! (I use my "new tab" button)

Urr, no, I use the "AeroFox" theme in my Windows version and it doesn't have that.

While that is true Grogan, it doesn't allow you to place the new tab button in the tab row itself. The other extensions we mentioned puts it in the tab row, right where I like it.

Actually, if I am understanding what you want correctly, all you have to do is double-click on the Tab bar and a Tab will appear.

Almost impossible to do. Another reason why I say, if FireFox wants to dominate the masses they need to start making their browser as functional and useful as IE7 out of the box, without the need to download and install a bunch of silly add-ons.

The browser being more secure is it's main selling point. Big deal, no one understands security. They want functionality.

hahah, you're so full of shit I can smell you from here. IE7 is a piece of crap and the word productive shouldn't be used in the same sentence.

What the Hell does Internet Explorer do, without addons, that Firefox doesn't? Or is it just that you don't realize you are using addons in Internet Explorer because activex controls get shoved up your arse?

This whole thread is about one big annoyance.

It doesn't matter what else I can come up with, because you're going to say it's crap because you personally don't see a need for it.

Now that is funny.

A little OT,but if you want a great browser that runs right out of the box,use Opera.

And both FF and Opera are eons ahead of I.E. as much more secure browsers.

Ever hear of Active X?

It seems like some days my entire job consists of cleaning the malware and hijacks and other garbage from client's computers, that is a direct result of using that browser.

vbscript/ActiveX won't work in Mozilla browsers. So, is that a detriment?

Mine too, and those are my best money making jobs because they eat up hours of time sitting on my ass, scanning, hunting and poking. Malware seems to be increasing again.

It's shooting myself in the foot, but I don't do malware cleanups anymore when I've installed firefox and made it the default browser. I don't do that all the time... I explain what that means and I don't push it. Some people want me to do that and they are rewarded with trouble free surfing. Everyone gets a Firefox install though, and I encourage them to use it. At the very least I tell them that it's an alternate browser for when IE lets them down.

My "personal findings" are worth more to me than a thousand people running their mouths in web forums. Internet Explorer is fragile, unstable ("we're sorry, but this program needs to close and you lose"), unsafe and unwieldy. When it gets screwed up, often other components of the Windows Shell aren't working correctly either.

It's pointless to argue with Microsoft enthusiasts though. They'll make excuses, blame the user, demand proof of everything you say in writing etc.

P.S. Now, I don't mean to say it isn't the user's fault in some way. Someone who only drives IE to church on Sundays doesn't run into any problems.

My parents, for example, have never had malware for as long as they've had computers (I've been doing their computers since 1995). Not even so much as a detection in their antivirus software (currently NOD32), let alone infection. They only do what they are supposed to do, never open unknown attachments (and their mail is all filtered anyways... especially the mail accounts that I provide) and never install anything. Only I install software.

I do the same and give my clients the speech and choice.

Most listen and those that don't, usually call me back in a couple of months.

I've even had a customer start screaming at me ,yelling ''Firefox rules '' at a flea market. lol

Most people like it once they get used to it. I had one guy who was initially skeptical send me an email out of the blue (the only reason he had mine is that I sent myself one from his computer and back again to test his mail client) and he said "Firefox kicks the ass of Internet Explorer!"

I give people Flash and Java and tell them that any site prompting to install a viewer or codec should be left.

Also, I've had customers who I've given Firefox because doing things on the Web (uploading pictures, banking, order forms etc.) has been less reliable with IE. More timeouts and crap.

Aggravating you by relaying real world experiences (and there's lots more where that came from) instead of posturing and trying to bait people? My pleasure

No posturing or bait here. Unless you are a Linux user or prefer to have a browser as customizable as Firefox, I firmly believe it's unnecessary.

It's all about our habits I guess. My homepage is Google. Everything I do starts with Google. If I want to go to www.dell.com. I click on a new tab, Google opens, I type dell, then click I'm there.

That's why I can't stand and don't understand why all browsers have a function to set what you want your homepage to be, but some don't carry that over to tabs. A blank tab? WTF is that and why don't I have an option to open a new tab as my homepage? What functionality do I have with a blank tab?

In FireFox, I have found and installed all the add-ons that make everything I want to do possible, but what a pain. Would it hurt to add these options in the program without the need of an add-on?

So in IE7 you open a new tab which tells you you've opened a new tab. Well, DOH!

Actually one of the things I prefer about Firefox is that it's pretty well infinitely customisable, even if it does require some addons to make it so.

I have four home pages. The primary is an HTML file with links to my favorite favorites (if you see what I mean). Then Google, then here and Worldstart. And when I open a new tab it opens to my primary home page.

I dont have a middle click button.

And IE 7 lasted less than a day on my computer.

I thought Avant was perfect for tabbed browsing.
Had tabs before IE7 and FF did.
Also had many options to configure the tabs.
One was "always open bookmarks in new tab"

I aint complaining and I will continue using FF,its just a small annoyance after using avant for 2-3 years.
I keep forgetting to right click.

Thanks Paul.

Crikey!! I didn't want to start WWIII guys ...LOL. Thanks to Acadia I now have my solution.

But just to stir the pot a little

I like IE7.0...always have. I don't give a rat's ass about the Active X issues. I have my Garlic ring, Holy water and three condoms. No issues at all.

Only reason I'm using FireFox over IE7.0 now is that it renders text on pages clearer. It's the "old eyes"... big f***kin glasses problem. Even enabling "clear type in HTML" for IE7.0 doesn't help. FF consistantly renders text clearer.

Was never an issue on my old NEC 950F CRT at 800 x600. But with my new Acer 22w LCD at 1680 x1050, even with text zoom, text clarity is an issue.

( BTW...I'm really, really happy with the Acer P201W. Better clarity than even a Samsung 20" LCD...and Samsung makes some of the better LCD screens. Side viewing angles are also impressive. Very little image change )

Well...that's enuf rambling at 3:19 AM....back to bed...ZZZZzzzz

It rates higher than Firefox 2.0, which they admit is discontinued in favour of Firefox 3, which has more elabourate mechanisms (it actually maintains a database of phishing sites). Why would they do that?

I have that disabled because I can't stand nannying software, and I just want my browser to go where I tell it to. I can also do without the extra i/o.

To me, phishing is a non issue that's easily avoided by exercising a little common sense.

In my opinion, if you surf inside of a sandbox, and using OpenDNS as your server, what browser you use is a non-issue. Am I wrong here, and if so, how so?

If you feel the need to do things like that just to use a web browser, you have issues

I don't believe in opendns either. First of all, I want to use DNS servers on my ISP's network so that I don't have to go through extra routing overhead just to look up addresses. Also, DNS should not be playing the role of nanny. Who decides what sites it's going to return correct results for? A panel of zealots like those spam blocklists?

Yup, I've got issues, security issues. Sandboxing, or those of you who use something even better, VMWare, simply "dissolve" the baddies away. And what "overhead" are you talking about?

http://www.howstuffworks.com/internet-infrastructure.htm

What I meant was, a DNS server on my ISP's network is local and is going to respond quickly. An external DNS server that I have to go through several "hops" (networks of routers) to get to is going to delay my lookups.

I reckon that makes sense. I personally have never noticed any slow down. Many folks say OpenDNS is actually faster but I have never noticed any speed up either; speed has remained identical to my senses as my ISPs server, so for the time being I am sticking with the slightly greater security especially with this broken Internet patching up thingie that's been happening lately.

One thing I don't like, is that FF does not have a " blank" Tab beside the current one in use, as IE 7.0 does.

Is there an add-on that will make FF's Tab bar look and behave like IE7.0's?

There are add ons. But if you click twice in a blank area of the tab bar a new tab will open. This makes the add ons of no use.
