Not true! Recently, I had to restore my OS, which left me with IE v.6. This morning, via Windows Updates, Microsoft decided to update my system to IE 7, which has an anti-phishing deal. When asked if I wanted to to enable that, I said okay. Locked up everything tighter than a drum. The IE 7 Window went blank, and no response. Finally was able to hit the Shut Down tab in Task Manager, and start over.

When I got back into Windows, I immediately went to Add/Remove, and IE 7 was there. I removed it, putting me back to the original IE 6. I run Firefox, anyway, and don't actually use IE. If IE 8 is as big a POS as IE 7, thanks but no thanks!!

I too, was able to remove IE7. This was on a new Lenovo laptop that came with XP Pro and IE7. Removed it because I didn't like it. After the removal IE6 was present. Not sure, but I think Shelly meant IE6 can't be removed.

Shelly was thinking that IE7 in Vista can't be removed -- which it can't.

It's a Vista world. It's easy to forget about XP. I have.

Not true. you are able to roll back to IE6 because when you install a newer version of IE it can be reversed, at least until you remove the backup files that are created. IE is an integral part of Windows XP and some version of it must be present, even if some other browser is actually used.

IE7 can not be removed from Vista because it was the version of IE that came with Vista. IE6 was the version that originally came with XP.

Removal may depend upon when Service Packs were installed in relation to IE7.

Well you did take a step backwards by going from Vista to XP, so I don't see a reason for you to upgrade to IE8.

My take on it is: I know I will someday, so why not now?

Installed on one computer so far without incident.

Will put it on at least one other, though probably not on 3 others more.
(Generally don't use IE, nor do the users of the other computers.)

Installed & seems to run fine.

FIND.
I like the FIND much better. Ctrl+F opens FIND. Wish it acted as a toggle though so it could also close it. (I don't recall IE7's FIND to be like this? <Shows how much I used IE7.>)

Tabs are colored.
I don't care for that. Messing a bit more, maybe it isn't so bad. If you open a series of links from a single site, they are all colored alike. (Color does not seem to related to the site itself.) But, if you drag a tab, repositioning it, the color changes ... Changes to the coloring for the series of links into which the tab was dragged. Why? Why not color all of the same domain alike or something like that - regardless of where they are relative to other tabs?

When I installed, I enabled two options that they offered; Accelerators (whatever that is) & something to do with searching or completion? (The MS web page help did not help me understand any better.)

Browser could certainly be laid out better to make more efficient use of the screen. Screen real-estate is horrendous, in particular on the Tabs bar. I can fit a whole 9 sites before it has to wrap .

SmartScreen Filter.
Now isn't that a dumb name to call something that seemingly is used to notify you of, or to check for, a potential "bad" (malware) site.

Developer Tools.
Now that looks interesting. I'd have to figure out what it's showing me. Unexpected to see anything like that, but I'm glad it's is there. Though I'm confused as to why it would be there by default. Can't imagine a "typical" user ever using it.

Compatibility View button.
First & second & third time I hit it, I didn't even realize it was then in "pressed" position. I can see it being hit inadvertently, confusing users.

Print Preview of http://www.msn.com/ comes up blank?
(Other pages do preview.)

Content Blocking.
There's a little button at the bottom of the browser for that. I'm clueless as to what it does.

Never liked the fact that opening a New Window duplicates the window that it was opened from.
Still happens.

The IE7 "menubar on top" hack still works.

(Perhaps there are some options for some of these settings, but I'm likely never to know?)

Well, it works. Is likely to be more secure. What's not to like. If you're going to use IE, go for it.

Depends on the system you access it with. If you're on XP it says XP, if you're on Vista then it downloads a Vista copy.

If you click on "Other locales and versions" you can download all versions of IE8.

That makes sense.

I installed IE8 on this XP machine at work this morning, and it caused no problems. Everything has been working normally. This machine has all updates including SP3 of course. It uses Outlook Express for the mail client, all links in mail open normally.

You shouldn't have to do anything to your Outlook Express password. If you have forgotten it, your ISP can provide it or you could download SIW "System Information (for) Windows". Run SIW and under the SOFTWARE listing click on Secrets. Voila, your password.

Neways....

Jim!!

I think IE8 might be for you. In case you don't already know, it allows a bunch of junk at the top in what is called a "Favorites Bar". Just like you like it!!

Check out my screen shots. I have it displayed using the largest icon settings.

A bunch of junk with titles:

Removing the search bar and putting the menu bar on top are the first things I do on new installs of IE since I first downloaded IE7.

I know what it looks like. I've been using it in beta release whenever I run Windows 7 beta. It's faster than IE6 so, once I buy Windows 7 later this year, I will just have to get used to its layout.

I still miss the Refresh button being located in the Toolbar. The free toolbar Refresh button that works with Vista/IE7 doesn't work for me in Win7/IE8.

Until then, whenever I'm running XP, it will still be IE6.

By the way, it's easy to enlarge Radar images using IE7/8.

Jim.

It's so easy - and even zoomed 400%, resolution and proportion of images is very good. On my monitor, it's excellent at 300%.

From IE8 beta Help:

Quote:
Zoom in on a webpage
(This content is preliminary and subject to change.)

Internet Explorer Zoom lets you enlarge or reduce the view of a webpage. Unlike changing font size, zoom enlarges or reduces everything on the page, including text and images. You can zoom from 10% to 1000%.

Click to open Internet Explorer.

On the bottom right of the Internet Explorer screen, click the arrow next to the Change Zoom Level button .

To go to a predefined zoom level, click the percentage of enlargement or reduction you want.
- or -
To specify a custom level, click Custom. In the Percentage zoom box, type a zoom value, and then click OK.

Notes
If you have a mouse with a wheel, hold down the Ctrl key, and then scroll the wheel to zoom in or out.

If you click the Change Zoom Level button , it will cycle through 100%, 125%, and 150%, giving you a quick enlargement of the webpage.

From the keyboard you can increase or decrease the zoom value in 10% increments. To zoom in, press Ctrl+(+). To zoom out, press Ctrl+(-). To restore the zoom to 100%, press Ctrl+0.

Jim.

For a production environment I would not in case it screws up something but for testing, sure. I still find it funny it took them 7 versions to finally have tabbed browsing. I wonder if 8 has better CSS support. I'll have to test in a VM.

I've been doing a little Googling and may have found the culprit.

Spybot's Immunize feature.

When it's enabled, IE is slow to open and slow to open tabs. When I undo the immunize in Spybot, IE8 is back to fast.

Seems to work - mines much snappier now immunisation is disabled.
Funnily enough Windows Mail was slower to open too since installing IE8 but now opens normally again.

Quite liking IE8. Been using Chrome since it came out but back onto IE for a bit now.

http://news.softpedia.com/news/IE8-RTW-Bulletproofed-Against-NET-DEP-and-ASLR-Bypass-107728.shtml

"The gold version of Internet Explorer 8 was bulletproofed against techniques designed to attack Internet Explorer 7 by leveraging inconsistencies in Windows Vista's memory protection mechanisms. Vista brought to the table a number of mitigations, additional security layers including Data Execution Prevention (DEP) and Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR), designed to make it extremely hard for exploits to work against the operating system.
Still, because of the actual design and implementation, the extra mitigations could in fact be defeated, as security researchers Alexander Sotirov and Mark Dowd demonstrated at BlackHat Vegas, in 2009.

Sotirov and Dowd managed to circumvent DEP and ASLR via .NET framework DLL’s that were used for memory page allocation in relation to predictable locations within the iexplore.exe process. Jonathan Ness, from MSRC Engineering, explained that the bypass was no longer valid with the copy of Internet Explorer 8 released to web on March 19, 2009. ..."

"Microsoft Confirms Critical 0-Day IE8 Vulnerability"
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Microsoft-Confirms-Critical-0-Day-IE8-Vulnerability-107491.shtml

"Microsoft has confirmed officially the zero-day vulnerability impacting Internet Explorer 8, the latest iteration of its IE browser. The security flaw was demonstrated on the first day of the Pwn2Own hacking context of the CanSecWest 2009 in Vancouver the past week. A security researcher identified only as Nils managed to own a Sony Vaio running Windows 7 via a vulnerability in IE8. Terri Forslof, the manager of Security Response for TippingPoint, revealed that Microsoft had acknowledged to her the existence of the issue.

“The MSRC (Microsoft Security Response Center) (...) let me know that they had reproduced and validated IE8 vulnerability discovered by the mysterious Nils. Of course, we can't tell you anything more than that - stay tuned for more information once Microsoft releases an update for it!"

Is that supposed to mean anything? ANY browser or operating system can be compromised, and all are. The hacker in question did it in order to win the Sony laptop as a reward. That is how we learn of vulnerabilities that are not immediately apparent, and get them fixed.

Score meaningless. But you knew that.

Wait a minute. I don't know if it matters, but the version of IE8 in Windows 7 isn't complete.

But I'm sure that the same vulnerability existed in the RTM version of IE8.
