I'll probably wait a week or so to see how the initial roll out goes before jumping into it.Hopefully you get an iso you can do a clean install that my 8 key will work on in case the upgrade doesn't go so well. This will be the first time I actually use the upgrade process. The iso will come in handy in case a drive fails or motherboard for that matter.

Do you think the upgrade would correct a corrupted .DLL on a Win 7 machine That SFC couldn't handle. I had a crash in Far Cry 4 and now I can't update video drivers, Libreoffice, or run HP printer updates. I haven't run into any other problems that I know of yet.

All I could get out of the log was the Library is damaged. There are thousands of entries and it is beyond my patience to read them all. The program problems just refer to a general .DLL error.

You could always try the upgrade version install which is the same as repair install in XP.

I signed up for the Win 10 upgrade. I would hope it is different enough to replace all that stuff. I considered a repair install but with all the updates that would have to be removed that might be just as much of a problem as an upgrade might be. I'll make sure to image it before I do anything. I use it for banking and all my wife's medical. Playing games on it like Far Cry 4 was stupid, but it came down to an overclock that was crashing the game. It damaged 7 but didn't phase 10. I suppose I'll find out the true cost of 10 when they start charging for upgrades.

Here's the lowdown on the cost's involving Windows 10
Posted on TechSpot "Quote"

Following the announcement of Windows 10's official launch date (it's July 29th, in case you were wondering), Microsoft has also revealed just how much Windows 10 will cost for those who are building new systems or who aren't eligible for the company's free upgrade offer.

Basically, Windows 10's pricing will stay the same as Windows 8.1's current pricing in the United States. That means Windows 10 Home will retail for $119, just like standard Windows 8.1; while Windows 10 Pro will retail for $199, just like Windows 8.1 Pro. The Windows 10 Pro Pack, allowing you to upgrade from Home to Pro, will cost $99.

The price of Windows 10 will be irrelevant for most people currently using Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 on their PC, as they will be eligible for Microsoft's limited time free upgrade offer. And in case you're wondering which version of Windows 10 you'll be upgraded to, Microsoft has revealed the upgrade pathways for Windows 7 and 8.1:

Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, Premium and Windows 8.1 users will be upgraded to Windows 10 Home
Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate and Windows 8.1 Pro users will be upgraded to Windows 10 Pro
Windows Phone 8.1 users will be upgraded to Windows 10 Mobile
Windows Enterprise, Windows RT and Windows 8 users are not eligible for a free upgrade

Although Windows 8 users are not directly eligible for an upgrade to Windows 10, by upgrading to Windows 8.1 for free, they will be able to take advantage of Microsoft's offer. As for Enterprise users, Microsoft will provide upgrades through their standard licensing agreement.

Will this free upgrade be available on a DVD? Absent that, I have no hope of upgrading even if I wanted to. My 0.6 Mbps internet service (all that's available where I live) would likely take 3 or 4 days just to download it.

This is probably a REALLY stupid question, but how do I find out whether I have 8.1 Home or 8.1 Pro?

I have seen suggestions that to get this notification you have to have KB3035583 installed, AND you have to have a Microsoft Account. I have the update, but not a Microsoft Account, and so far no notification. Of course that could be simply because M$ are staggering notifications.

See what WINVER.exe reports?

Either from a command prompt or from Start | Run.
Oops, Win8 doesn't have Start | Run, oh well .

My Win7 at least, reports 'Ultimate'.

I use Classic Shell's Start Menu. Simply left clicking the Start Button reveals which version Win 8.1 is:

You could try Belarc Advisor-free.
It'll tell everything about your computer without trying to load
any bloatware.
I install it temporarily while in a virtual mode and in a sandbox.

@Jim & therube. The attached is what I get from winver.exe, Control Panel and About Windows. It's about as useful as pockets in knickers. But thanks for trying.

@Greta's Dad. Belarc tells me exactly the same.

@KJT. I too use Classic Shell's Start Menu but I don't see what you see. I have no text on the left.

Switch to "Classic style" temporarily and it should appear.

Right click the start button, select Settings, and on the "Start Menu Style" tab mark Classic style, then, click OK.

Jim, it's a setting in Classic Shell Start Menu. You're using single column, so you get the text. I'm using two columns, so I don't.

But it still doesn't answer my question, because when I switch to single column all it says is "Windows 8.1" I think I have to assume that the absence of "Pro" means "Home", although it's a bit remiss of M$ not to make it a bit clearer.

That would be my assumption, too. If it doesn't say Windows RT 8.1 or Windows 8.1 Pro or Windows 8.1 Enterprise, it's probably Windows 8.1.

Paul, if you go to Control Panel and then System, the version should be listed at the top of the screen (under where it says 'Windows Edition').

It was just that every Windows version, as far back as I can remember, put the version (along with memory capacity, Service Pack level, etc) in that location. It is the only place I go for this information when required.

I remember saying that in post 15 lol .In any case if it says just 8.1 it's just 8.1 there is only 3 versions plain and Pro,Enterprise. The Naming scheme wasn't really Home and Pro.The RT was only for tablets.

That's ok One thing of note is how 10 will deal with automatic updates it seems if you update from the plain 8.1 you will get 10 Home version which will take away the option of deferring updates and they will be installed automatically whether you like it or not.The option of reviewing and deciding whether to install only comes in to play from Pro on up.I have 8.1 Pro so it doesn't affect me but it would piss me off to lose that option as I look everything over before installing.Edit: I forgot the link to the article where I read this.

Couldn't agree more. There's a pretty good chance I'll update to Pro very soon.

Has anyone installed the Pro Pack? If so, how did it go?

Try this link.

Edit: Paul, I also noticed that CCleaner displays the Windows Edition in the header right beside the program name.

Kind of reminds me of the "what version(s) of .NET do I have installed"?

With the "MS" answer to troll around in the Windows Registry.

How ridiculous!

Looks like you just have the basic Win 8.1. That would, unfortunately, be the one with the automatic updates that you cannot control.

Yep. Seriously considering the 8.1 Pro Pack.

Now here's something typically Microsoft ridiculous. The Windows 8.1 Pro Pack also installs Windows Media Center, which will then be removed when you upgrade to Windows 10.

Microsoft has confirmed that users will be able to do a clean install, not just an upgrade. See this link.

Another restart!

Based on the linked article, I installed three optional updates - the two w8.1 ones and KB3068708.

http://www.infoworld.com/article/2930713/microsoft-windows/microsoft-re-re-releases-kb-2952664-kb-2976978-and-kb-2977759.html?phint=newt%3Dinfoworld_tech_microsoft&phint=idg_eid%3D61d42ce3c34669c5e7cd65dceb4ce24d#tk.IFWNLE_nlt_entwindows_2015-06-03

Not sure which one did it, but I now have the Get Windows 10 icon in the tray. So there are hoops that need to be jumped through.

KB3068708 tries to install on each update and each time fails with error code 80070020.
Anyone else get this?
I'm running W7 Home Premium 64-bit.

EDIT:
Having failed on 4 occasions it came in again today by itself and installed successfully; don't understand that!
Curious that the first 3 were classified as "Optional" and the last 2 as "Recommended".

Just an FYI. For those not seeing the upgrade icon in Win 7 one has to uninstall and reinstall update KB3035583. There's a download for the update here:

HI

I have two computers - Win 7 Home Premium, and Win 8.1 Pro.

Win 7 had KB3035583 installed already. I installed KB3035583 on my Win 8.1 machine.

Neither machine has offered me the reservation for Windows 10.

I see from Paul's response it appeared he got his reservation right after uninstalling and reinstalling KB3035583, I tried that as well and still no icon for the reservation.

Any other ideas? Anyone else not received their reservation request for the appropriate versions of Windows? thanks

I have one machine that absolutely will not show the icon. It is a Win7 machine with very minimal specs, but still within the requirements of Win10. I've searched online and followed every suggestion provided. I've ensured that all necessary, and even some optional, updates are installed, I've uninstalled and reinstalled KB3035583 as you have, and still no icon. Not sure where to turn next.

This is utterly a stab in the dark.

Have you tried customising the tray, just in case it's there, but set to Hide icon and notifications or Only show notifications?

It's unlikely, but you never know.

Nice try, but no go. One of the first things I always do is to ensure that ALL system tray icons show.

Hi Dave,

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere - didn't see it.

I don't see a response to your issue, which at least one other poster noted as well.

I also have this problem with one older laptop using Win8.1. No matter what I try it just won't present the reservation icon in the system tray. I did read, however, that Windows 10 will be available from Windows Update on or just after July 29th. Apparently so many people were having this problem that Microsoft elected to simplify how users can upgrade.

Again, sorry if this has already been posted. Hope this helps.

I've been seeing the RTM iso on torrent sites already supposedly untouched which includes pro/home versions. This would be the version released to companies like Dell and HP early so they can work out any driver issues with their hardware before they release on new systems.

Hi Zeke,

Yes, IE11. Having said that, this afternoon out if the blue the Win10 upgrade icon suddenly just appeared in the system tray for my one 'problem' computer (a laptop).

I did run the scripts recommended on the Microsoft support forum site linked elsewhere in this thread, but that was a couple of days ago. Maybe it just takes a while for one or more of those fixes to work.
