Now that is bad news.

I sure hope Dave doesnt return to drugs after this one.

Like he hasnt had enough to deal with.

So much for the worlds most dangerous r & r band.

Hang in there Dave, get well soon.

No more Megadeth? That's almost as heartbreaking as finding out that I can't play Celine Dion CD's on my computer.

Somebody be sure to notify me when Roy Orbison decides to retire. Now that's real music.

Well, i don't think that anyone here could deny the amount of influene that Mustaine and Megadeth had on the rock and roll community, especially the "metal age". Orbison and Mustaine, one made popular easy listenting music, the other made popular heavy metal...and both are equally important.

I saw the "Behind the Music" on Megadeth not too long ago, and from what i understand, Mustaine had entirely kicked his drug and alcohol problems, and has been clean for about 8 years (around the time Youthanasia came out).

P.S. I don't think Orbison would last five minutes in a contest of skill or originality with Mustaine...not to mention that the content of Megadeth's music contained quite a bit more social commentary. Listen to Youthanasia, Countdown to Extinction, or Cryptic writings, and you'll be surprised that Megadeth had a lot to say about our world.

Orbison, easy listening? Try rock and roll.

Metal is not rock and roll. And by the time metal came around rock and roll was already defined, it didn't need any help from Megadeth. Metal was even defined long before Megadeth was a glimmer in their daddys' eyes. Ever hear of Black Sabbath or maybe Jimi Hendrix? The only difference was that Sabbath could actually play music and didn't rely on MTV to make them big. And no matter how many drugs he was on Hendrix was a creative genius. Even AC/DC (another band I can't stand) had more influence than Megadeth.

As for skill. It takes more to actually hit the notes you are trying to hit. Rather than beat on intruments trying to make a noise you can sell as music.

What someone has to say about the world is poetry, not music.

While I don't think the post 80's metal/grunge bands have any talent what-so-ever and I can't stand their "music", I wrote the above to see how long it would take for someone to "notify" me that Orbison has retired from life.

Grand Funk Railroad!

Roy's not dead, he's just living somewhere else.

Quote:
A candy-colored clown they call the sandman
Tiptoes to my room every night
Just to sprinkle stardust and to whisper
"Go to sleep. Everything is all right."

I close my eyes, Then I drift away
Into the magic night. I softly say
A silent prayerLike dreamers do.
Then I fall asleep to dream My dreams of you.

In dreams I walk with you. In dreams I talk to you.
In dreams you're mine. All of the time we're together
In dreams, In dreams.

But just before the dawn, I awake and find you gone.
I can't help it, I can't help it, if I cry.
I remember that you said goodbye.

It's too bad that all these things, Can only happen in my dreams
Only in dreams In beautiful dreams.

sorry, myk, but i beg to differ. those two comments are typical unfortunate blanket statements usually coming from people that have never really studied that type of music and repeat general prejudice.

yes, i grant you that there is an unusually high percentage of untalented morons wielding instruments that should not be allowed to touch one in today's rock and metal music and related genres, compared to some other areas.

but any music genre you inspect you will find that it contains also a significant number of no-talents, no matter whether it's hip-hop, country, etc.

the rock/metal genre actually has a lot of amazingly talented musicians, especially the progressive rock/metal area, you'd be surprised.

i'll give you just one example out of many: dream theater. this band consists of 5 amazing musicians that have degrees in music, have studied music theory for years, are experts in their field, idols for countless aspiring musicians, and create such a unique musical experience, it blows me away every time i listen to it. to the untrained listener it might sound weird and like noise at times, but anybody who listens a little closer will realize their amazing musical skill, the ease with which they apply it, and most importantly, the incredibly versatile music they write.

while i respect your personal taste and opinion, i think you should give the genre a little bit more credit - it deserves it

I'm sure not playing will be hard for Dave, but spending more time with his family instead of touring sounds like good compensation. I've been thinking about picking up the new live cd. Anybody heard it yet??

That is a huge loss. I love Megadeth.

Social Commentary is just that. It can be in song form, poetry or even a simple oratory. There is no denying that despite the metal sound Megadeath said many wholesome things which is more than I can say for many "punk" rock bands.

I think Shelly has probably heard them. He probably just thought it was a car wreck happening.

Eagles yes, Journey no. (Maybe it's how much they were overplayed when I was young but I don't like them. Although I did turn them up the other day when they came on the radio because it reminded me of my youth.)

Now I'm going to have to try to find my video of Roy Orbison and Friends.

Yeah I hear ya. Radio pretty much played the hell out of both groups but they did put out some good tunes. I've aged and gone mostly country now because I decided I like to actually hear the words but good rock and roll I can still enjoy.

With all the rebirths of dinosaurs in the last couple of years I wonder how long before the Eagles do get back together? I saw a Moody Blues concert a few months back and a couple of those guys were having noticeable challenges hitting certain notes not to mention that they might have made good use of a walker too. They sure brought back memories though.

Moody Blues - now there's a band. In their heyday they used 32 different instruments in their live shows - and I'm not talking about just swapping guitars, either. Not an ouststanding lead singer, but superb harmonies (for those who can recall what harmony actually means.)

Best harmonies in rock would have to be The Beach Boys (even if you don't like their music, which I don't). A close second would be The Mama's and The Pappa's.
After that you would have to go back to DooWop bands.

You're listening to too much metal. Broaden your horizons.

Don't give me that "broaden your horizons" crap, I listen to more types of music than probably anybody on the planet. Sure i listen to metal, I always will...but i also listen to Sasha and Digweed, Depeche Mode, Erasure, RATM, Pink Floyd, Orbital, The Kingston Trio, The Del Vikings, Beastie Boys.....do i need to go on? I don't think the forum has enough space on its servers for me to list all the bands i listen to and like. There are very few bands which i will say just flat out suck...like Creed..they suck...really bad. Bad drummer, worse bass player, and a vocalist that needs to put about 400lbs more oomph into his voice..guitar player is ok.

Why would I be embarassed? I may be young (I turn 26 on April 17th), but i have listened to almost all of those bands since i was 10 or 11. I spent most of my life with my dad, who was in a band when he was my age, and i was listening to Floyd while still in the womb. Anyway, i don't have a printer. Maybe you could print them out for me and send them off as a birthday present

Yeah, I still listen to a very few bands from the era like Floyd and the Beatles, maybe a little Steely Dan (excellent trivia ? - what's a "steely dan?") but for the most part it doesn't exist for me. The idea of you listening to metal when you're 46 is like me listening to Deep Purple I think - it's just not going to happen. On the other, hand some teenage friends of mine are still playing the same music they played then (which really disappoints me) so who knows. But really, you will probably be really surprised what happens to your music preferences when you're in your late 30's or so.

I know exactly what a "Steely Dan" is, but you and i both know that's a trick to get me kicked off the forum..nice try

BTW, my dad started listening to Floyd when Syd Barrett was around, and he still listens to Steely Dan, Rush, The Beatles, Floyd...i even sent him an extra copy of Depeche Mode's "Exciter" Album, and he said he's been playing it non-stop for the last few months. I wouldn't be surprised if I was the same way.

Oh Jesus, I just realized I'm old enough to be your dad. Later, I gotta go shoot myself now...

P.S. Have you read William Burroughs, or heard him speak? Pretty trippy guy - he does a spoken word thing on an old Laurie Anderson record I've got somewhere - I love his voice.

I'm 39 and listening to Nazareth - Hair of The Dog right now.
(And I'm noticing how much of a rip off all the later metal bands are. No wonder I can't tell them apart, they're all ripping each other off.)

I still like the same types of music as I did, I've just added a much wider selection of types to the mix.

I don't see that as being a wide variety. Those are all pretty much in the same broad catagory. About like someone saying they like both kinds of music, Country AND Western.

Classical, Jazz, Big Band/Swing, C&W (old style), Blues, R&B, Folk, Rock and Roll, Funk, Soul, Calipso, Soka, Reggie, Ska, Punk, Zydeco and all the styles that came from them and are merges between the above would be a broad variety. I even enjoy playing Polka (but not listening to it so much).

Yeah, i can see how someone might see similarities between Orbital and the Kingston Trio...are you always on crack or is it just this week?

I notice you have a fetish about crack. Could it be that you assume that everyone thinks and does as you do? I'm not so sorry to inform you that I quit doing drugs a long time ago, you should think about doing the same.

I guess I can understand why someone with your very (self)limited exposure to music would think that electronic music doesn't fit in with the category it's from.

Wow, folk AND rock. You do have a broad variety of musical interests. No wonder you can make such informed statements as Megadeth was influential to rock or that Queensryche has the best harmonies out of all the rock bands there ever was.

Yes, Rock and Roll, Folk, Rock and R&B are in the same broad catagory. Without the folk singers there wouldn't have been early rock. It would've stayed country and "black music" would've stayed with the blacks. Do the names Arlo Guthrie and Bob Dylan ring a bell? Folk singers/Rock icons.

that is indeed a milestone album. i got the live dvd "operation livecrime" for my birthday. absolutely amazing show. even after 15 years, still an outstanding performance that many live acts could learn a lot from.

They put on a pretty darn good show Paul and played instruments superbly still but their voices understandably are giving away their ages. Attempting to jump around on stage and act energetic also didn't fool anyone. The one fellow is in his mid sixties and darn spry for his age but it still shows nonetheless. They do have a new CD either out already or coming out which I'm going to buy.

while i was never a journey fan either, i am in absolute awe of one of their band members: steve smith, the drummer. i've met him several times in person, and also watched him perform in drum clinics. his versatility, abilities, techniques, repertoire are surpassed only by very few. astonishing what's inside the head of this nice, quiet, shy, down to earth person.

Well, I like them also. My problem, if you want to call it that, is that I can find something I like from just about any type of music. From (in no particular order) country to blue grass to pop to hard rock to heavy metal to rap to classical to reggae to jazz to...you get the picture

The pentatonic/minor 2nd/chromatic flurries/lightning fast low E string plucking guitar world suffers a loss but he's still young enough to enjoy himself and he'll never suffer the fate of other rockers less fortunate who have to continue playing well into their 60's. Plus, with years of experience and contacts I doubt you've heard the last of him, mourn not DM, he'll be back.

I have heard of them. I might have even heard them on the radio or accidently hit one of their music videos while sleepsurfing with the tv remote. Music is not one of my passions. It was a neat tool for picking up women when I was studly garfunkle a long time ago. Whoever this dude is I wish him well, seems like a lot of folks like his music.

The Top 5 Metal albums of all time...(in no particular order)

Black Sabbath-Black Sabbath (some would say Master of Reality)

Led Zeppelin-Presence (They are defined as hard rock, like it or not).

Metallica-And Justice For All...

Megadeth-Countdown to Extinction

Motorhead-Ace of Spades

On another note... was fortunate enough to see Ozzy on his first tour, yes, the one with R.R., AND, saw the OZ in a BAR! Motorhead's Ace of Spades tour, AND, Page and Plant, the first time 'round.

Long live metal, arrrr.

Bye Dave, we'll miss ya! Keep those power chords alive up there, or, where ever!

Only 5? I wouldn't even start into the 80's if I was limited to 5.

Black Sabbath is a great album but many of their others are just as great. Paranoid is probably their tops and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath would have to rank right up there too. That's 3 albums and I haven't even got out of Black Sabbath.

I really can't believe people are ranking the late metal up there with the early metal. Listen to the old songs. The new bands are nothing but clones. After listening to Nazareth-Hair Of The Dog last night I heard exactly who Guns and Roses were ripping off.

Saying those later bands are ranked up there is like saying Beatle Mania is ranked up with the Beatles.

damn! now there's an era coming to an end. and that after he struggled for so long and finally cleaned up his act.

the report didn't reveal any details about the injury that lead to the nerve damage. i just hope it wasn't self-inflicted with a needle.

at least he seems to have a positive outlook on his future, career, and life, that's good to hear.
