"As for skill. It takes more to actually hit the notes you are trying to hit. Rather than beat on intruments trying to make a noise you can sell as music. ... While I don't think the post 80's metal/grunge bands have any talent what-so-ever and I can't stand their "music"..."
sorry, myk, but i beg to differ. those two comments are typical unfortunate blanket statements usually coming from people that have never really studied that type of music and repeat general prejudice.
yes, i grant you that there is an unusually high percentage of untalented morons wielding instruments that should not be allowed to touch one in today's rock and metal music and related genres, compared to some other areas.
but any music genre you inspect you will find that it contains also a significant number of no-talents, no matter whether it's hip-hop, country, etc.
the rock/metal genre actually has a lot of amazingly talented musicians, especially the progressive rock/metal area, you'd be surprised.
i'll give you just one example out of many: dream theater. this band consists of 5 amazing musicians that have degrees in music, have studied music theory for years, are experts in their field, idols for countless aspiring musicians, and create such a unique musical experience, it blows me away every time i listen to it. to the untrained listener it might sound weird and like noise at times, but anybody who listens a little closer will realize their amazing musical skill, the ease with which they apply it, and most importantly, the incredibly versatile music they write.
while i respect your personal taste and opinion, i think you should give the genre a little bit more credit - it deserves it
