Belgium's highest court recently ruled that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon can be tried for war crimes for his role in the slaughtering of up to 2,000 unarmed Palestinians in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps outside Beirut. Many of the victims were stabbed and a large number of women were murdered after being gang-raped.
In the past ten years Israel has doubled the number of settlements in the occupied territories. In the last year Israel has built 34 new settlements. There is a double standard going on in Palestine and a failure to recognize that most of the violence has come from Israel. Five times as many Palestinians--unarmed civilians--have been killed by Israel in the occupied territories.
Israel is established on nearly eighty percent of the territory of Palestine. Nearly a million Palestinians lost their homes so Israel could exist. The suicide bombings should be condemned, but so should the acts of Israel's violence against the Palestinians: During Israel's incursions into Jenin and Nablus, Israeli soldiers shot at journalists and blocked access for food and medical supplies for which Amnesty International has accused the Israeli army of committing war crimes.
